  • How to insert a text box

  • When to use a text box instead of a placeholder

Understanding Text in PowerPoint

Most PowerPoint slide layouts include text placeholders where you can click and begin typing immediately. Placeholders help you organize titles and other content according to the selected slide layout.

If you want to place text somewhere else on the slide, you can insert a text box from the Insert tab. Unlike placeholders, text boxes can be positioned almost anywhere on the slide.

Step-by-Step Instructions

To add text using a placeholder

  1. Click inside a text placeholder.

  2. Begin typing your text.

To add text using a text box

  1. Select the Insert tab.

  2. Click Text Box.

  3. Click anywhere on the slide.

  4. Begin typing your text.

Why This Is Useful

Knowing both ways to add text gives you more flexibility when creating presentations. Placeholders help keep your slides organized, while text boxes let you add text exactly where you want it.
