What is a Click?


Definition

A click is a single press and release of a mouse button used to select or activate an item on the screen. It sends a brief signal to the computer indicating which object or control has been chosen. This action is one of the primary methods for interacting with graphical elements in most operating systems and applications.

Characteristics

  • Performed using a mouse or similar pointing device

  • Acts on whatever the mouse pointer is positioned over

  • Usually selects an item or activates a control

  • Can trigger different results depending on context

  • Is brief and momentary, not continuous

Examples

  • Clicking an icon to select it

  • Clicking a button in a dialog window

  • Clicking inside a text document to place the cursor

  • Clicking a menu option to choose a command

  • Clicking a link in a web browser

Non-Examples

  • Moving the mouse without pressing a button

  • Dragging an item across the screen

  • Typing on the keyboard

  • Touching the screen on a touchscreen device

  • Holding down a mouse button continuously
