What is a menu?


Definition

A menu is an on-screen list of commands or options available within an application or part of the system. It presents related actions in an organised format that can be opened and selected when needed. This structure helps users understand what a program can do and choose actions without memorising commands.

Characteristics

  • Displays a list of related options or commands

  • Belongs to a specific application or part of the system

  • Usually appears when selected and disappears when not in use

  • Options are shown as words, icons, or both

  • Organised in a clear order, often by category or frequency

Examples

  • The File menu in Microsoft Word showing options like New, Open, and Save

  • A toolbar with always-visible buttons
