What is File Type?

Definition

A file type is the format assigned to a file that identifies what kind of information it contains and how it should be handled by the computer. Different file types are associated with different applications and may support different features, editing capabilities, or uses. This helps the system determine how a file can be opened, viewed, edited, or shared.

Characteristics

  • It is usually shown as a file extension at the end of a file name (such as .docx or .pdf)

  • It determines which app is used to open the file

  • It affects whether the file can be edited or only viewed

  • It stays the same even if the file is moved or renamed

  • It might be changed by saving the file in a different format

Examples
